Outreach for UN Event on Disarmament

Wednesday 11 October 2017

Topics: Events

The UN Dag Hammarskjöld Library based at the UN Headquarters in New York is mandated to support UN departmental research needs, primarily on thematic and subject areas that the UN addresses. One of these themes is disarmament.

On 26 September 2017, during the observance of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, the UN General Assembly held a one-day high-level event, to address issues that pertain to disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation. To support delegates attending the event, the Library organised an outreach activity and repackaged several information products which included:

- a research guide on disarmament which aggregates peer-reviewed UN and non-UN resources on the subject,

- a book-exhibit in the Library’s reading room in the UN Headquarters, highlighting publications on disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation.

During the one day outreach activity, UN Library staff answered questions about researching UN resources to attendees of the event.  Delegates from the UN’s Permanent Missions who stopped by the information desk were pleased to learn that the UN Library could support their research needs. Staff members were equally pleased to learn that they could access journals and e-books while some expressed interest in follow-up training sessions.
